The War of the Worlds · review
Spoiler warning
This review may discuss plot details.
About a year ago, when I just started reading manga as a consultant at a comic store, I picked up the first volume of ''The war of the world's'' or ''Ucchuu Sensou'', but that was it, we didn't get the following volumes until just a few days ago, of course I jumped at the opportunity to read all of it in one sitting as soon as I could. It did not disappoint. It had a few minor annoying plot-holes, but they didn't really impact the plot and a few misleading ''chekhov's guns'', but overall I would say it was pretty great. It's short, punchy, visually brilliantand leaves you deeply impacted after so many up's and down's that it just begs for a continuation (but in this case I think it would do better without one).
The fight's are awesome, as I said the story has a lot of up's and down's and like a martian roller coaster it takes you through an entire story with the sense of both glorious victory and dreadful damnation.
I don't want to spoil it much, the only thing I want to say is that I really vibed with the plot piece of the main character being a photographer, it's such a unique perspective in manga (at least from what I've read) and ever so relatable since I myself am a cameraman and a practicing photographer. I loved it because it was never forgotten or thrown away- but there's one thing about the very end that I didn't like, or rather, which I wanted to see badly, but couldn't.
(Small spoiler)
That being -the photos he was taking. Of course there were pictures, but not the one's he was taking as he was being blasted with lazers and bodyparts, canon fire, decrepit cities, etc etc....like, if you make it such a big point to document the struggle of humanity against the martians- why..not show it? Dunno how others felt about it, but I was really looking forward to that :(
Anyway, besides that and a few plot holes, I would want to recommend it to everyone, it's only 3 volumes long and has better pacing and leaves you more satisfied than some 20+ volume mangas, imo (phew, safe)
so yeah, read it.
