I love taboo topics done well in anime. This is why I really enjoyed After the Rain a while back. The premise of a high school girl madly in love with a middle-aged man could have easily fallen into the land of fanservice and masturbation material. But it was handled with such delicacy, subtlety, and depth that it became a mellow work of art that floats in my heart to this day. It is a show-don't-tell of the awkward interactions between two despondent souls, separated by decades of age yet strung together by a one-sided desire, evolving into a genuine, healing connection.
