massive massive spoilers This completely deviated from my expectations at first because I was expecting it to show how the Future Foundation managed to gradually build up society again (which, btw, im kind of disappointed that the anime didn’t show how. I mean I guess they got armies of troops to try to kill off brainwashed people but if despair was so infectious shouldn’t they have been brainwashed eventually too?). Anyway, back to the show itself, so apparently it’s going to be Killing Game Round 3 with some new some old characters. Great, another whole series of mindblowing mysteries right? But to my disappointment, nope, thiswas very telenova-esque and wanted to abandon the very theme that Danganronpa is so well known for: mystery. Instead of being a murder mystery anime like I really think it should have been (it if aint broke, don’t fix it, right?), it focused on conflicts between Munakata and like, everyone, and the petty fights between Cotton Candy Girl, Yellow Spiky Boy, and Pharmacist Witch (who was apparently able to understand molecular chemistry well beyond the capabilities of our greatest scientists today …at the age of 5…), leaving approximately 5% of the story for the real, potentially exciting (emphasis on potential) mystery. Anyway, I maybe could have tolerated Munakata or even enjoyed his conflicts if he wasn’t just so damn fucked up in the head. Sure, his girlfriend just died which may have quite shaken him up (if he was, he didn’t show it…like at all…), but his irrational ideologies seemed to exist beforehand and only worsened as the anime went on. His goal to eliminate any creature that shows any despair (what is despair anyway? The anime uses it vaguely. Technically if you feel sad are you not in despair? Anyway, I’m assuming by “despair” the anime means crazy psycho murder-craving Junko clone), which is oppressive and authoritarian. If he was that kind of guy, I can understand his actions and call him rational, but no the anime needed to portray him as a positive, hopeful character that genuinely cared for the future mankind. This severely conflicted with his tyrannical behavior to the point of bizarreness that there was no way I could take Munakata seriously as a character. Going on to his main opponent, Makoto, I was dissatisfied with how the anime made him look like some hero. In the game he was just the average Joe, but this anime deeply exaggerated his “strength” and “hope”. The only phrase I feel appropriate to describe Makoto is naïvely optimistic. And he’s given waaaaay more credit than he deserves. I don’t know about the anime, but in the game it was 99% (if not 100%) Kirigiri who triumphed over Junko, yet Makoto is given pretty much all the credit. Oh and Kirigiri’s death. Like I said before, it was utterly pointless. I genuinely believe that the only reason it was implemented was to shock the audience and make them feel sad. That’s all. But oh no, we can’t keep the audience sad for too long! So instead of killing Kirigiri with the usual technique of watching Tengan’s video, we will make the most asspulling (btw, there is so much more asspulling I can talk about, but I feel this is getting far too long) forbidden action ever and have her die that way! Anyway to cut this short I think you can understand how I feel about future. Massive disappointment.
