Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
Before I begin let me first say that I loved the first season and was definitely excited for the second. However I was very disappointed. Story: 2 The first episode is the only "original" episode throughout the entire season. It's a good episode and you need to watch it in order to understand the movie which comes after this dreadful season. Then we get to the absolute worst part of the season: The Endless Eight. Episode 2 shows the SOS Brigade members enjoying their last two weeks of summer to the fullest. This is a good episode however the next 7 episodes that follow this arein a time loop and the episodes are nearly identical to each other. The only difference is episode 9 where the ending changes. I'm not going to lie, but I had to skip 3 episodes of this since it was that awful. There is no reason to watch episodes 3-8 at all. And finally after that we get 5 episodes on how the SOS Brigade Club made the movie from the first season. I would like to say that the movie episode from season 1 is easily one of the funniest and enjoyable episodes of the whole show, so I don't mind seeing how they made it. However this takes up 5 episodes which is a lot, considering they only had about 2 episodes of new content and ideas so this kind of feels lazy in a way. The 5 episodes are enjoyable but not great or hilarious, just good episodes. Like I said, this could and should have been about 2-3 episode long.
Art: 9
Easily the best part of season 2 has to be its animation. It looks better than season 1 since it was released 3 years later and I don't have a problem with it.
Sound: 5
After season 1's God Knows and Lost My Music it's hard to top it. I do enjoy the music but because of the Endless Eight episodes you hear the exact same music played at the same time in the same setting so it gets old and repetitive. It's not the music's fault, it's the story's fault for being like this.
Characters: 5
The characters are good in episodes 1,2,9-14 because you see them do the exact same things over and over again throughout 7 boring and repetitive episodes. Like the sound, it's not the characters fault for being boring, it's the story's fault.
Enjoyment: 3
I did enjoy the episodes not including the Endless Eight however because it takes up half of the season I just couldn't really enjoy it. To get the best enjoyment out this season I recommend episodes 1,2 and 9. Episodes 10-14 are optional and they're not bad they just take up 5 episodes.
Overall: 3
I just don't understand how no one on the team thought hey aren't you tired of doing the exact same thing over and over for 7 episodes. I mean season 2 is hard to recommend besides the episodes I mentioned earlier. Season 2 is a big disappointment and i don't know how people enjoy the Endless Eight at all.
