Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Story: 10/10 In the first six episodes, this anime seems like a typical monster-of-the-week mecha anime, however after this point the story really fleshes out. Themes of humanity, reality, and mental health are explored in a compelling way. Although there are many biblical references, they are not inherently christian, and are tied into science. The last few episodes are very abstract, and requires the audience to be intuitive. Overall, the story and narrative are very well written. Art: 10/10 Each character is designed to be very different in appearance, except where they are intentionally designed to look similar - always with good reason. The fight sequences are iconic, many modern Japanese and Western animated shows/movies reference NGE in their fight sequences. The surreal sequences towards the end are done beautifully.
Sound: 10/10
The voice acting is cast perfectly and music is utilised extremely well. The theme tune might possibly be my favourite anime opening of all time, and I enjoyed the use of Beethoven to contrast the scene happening on screen.
Characters: 10/10
Although most of the character development goes to Shinji, every character is very fleshed out and develops throughout the show. A lot of the show focuses on each character's flaws, and how trauma influences their behaviour. The portrayal of mental illness is very accurate.
Enjoyment: 10/10
I really loved watching this, if I could have my memory erased so I could watch it for the first time all over again I would. I enjoy well-written stories, good character development, well animated fight scenes, and the exploration of deep themes which make me think and this show contained it all.
Overall: 10/10
This is definitely my favourite anime. It is known for being groundbreaking and I feel like everyone should watch NGE at least once.
