Review of Katanagatari
SPOILER FREE: Ok this is my first review ever, so sorry if its shit. Where do I begin? You have no idea how long its been since I watched something that I enjoyed so much, every episode was so interesting even though most of it consists of people talking. Story: 9/10 This is simply amazing, dare I say that this anime has the best pacing that I have ever seen. They never let you be confused while watching, something that a lot of animes do nowadays. This will remind you a lot of the monogatari series, since its made by the same creators. Everything made sense, they leave it all out on the open, while there are certain things that arent explained, it's all done for the sake of the story. What im trying to say is that everything fits together, while keeping a perfect pace.
Art: 9/10
The art is very unique, either you love it or you hate it. Very simplistic, but at the same time very detailed, this allows characters to be easily distinguishable and have a memorable look. The moment you look at a character, you instantly know who it is, it also gives them a lot of personality due to their unique looks. One example of this is Pengin, he is a very shy and nervous person, which is why he is always dressed as a penguin.
The eyes are one of the reason why i love the art so much, its so different and unique. Its almost like they dont have eyes at all. Though I do think that its inconsistent with all characters, I dont like how some characters have normal eyes and others dont, but maybe only swordsmen have normal eyes and everyone else dont, idk.
Sound: 8/10
The soundtrack used throughout the show fits the story and the genre so well, you will never hear something that sounds out of place. The OP and outro songs are so good, especially the outro song (lay back is my favourite). I always watched till the end of the outro just so i could hear the whole song.
Overall its very unique and pleasant soundtrack and isnt forgettable
Character: 10/10
For me this is the highlight of the anime, the character development is done so well. Every character put forward I cared about, every single one, they made me feel sad when anyone died even the "bad guys". I put quotation marks on the "bad guys" because while at the beginning they are shown as bad people, you quickly become attached to said characters. Even during short scenes, they take the time to show you how close each character is to each other, and how they might have built up their relationships.
Consistency is something that every anime should aim for, and Katanagatari hit it perfectly, some phrases that a side character during a short scene will be referenced during another scene like 5 episodes ahead. This is great because you feel immersed in their world.
Yasuri, who started as a cold hearted person that didnt care who he killed, let alone distinguish two different people from eachother, slowly softened up as he killed more and more people. He even got to the point where he felt guilt and regretted killing some person.
Enjoyment: 9/10
This took me for a roller-coaster of emotions, made me really happy at time, but made me cry my fucking eyes out at others. They most certainly arent afraid to crush your soul, which is something that I love and respect. A lot of animes just go for the easy route and make everything turn out ok in the end, which isnt how it actually happens. Horrible things happen to everyone and animes shouldnt try to pretend it doesnt and make the character lives perfect without any major issues.
I loved watching every second of this anime and highly recommend anyone to watch it.
