Review of Hunter x Hunter

"Hunter x Hunter (2011)" is a masterclass in shounen storytelling. What starts off as a seemingly light-hearted adventure quickly evolves into a deep, emotionally complex, and often dark tale about ambition, morality, and human nature. Don’t let the bright colors and cheerful tone of the early episodes fool you — this anime pulls no punches and constantly subverts expectations. The story follows Gon Freecss, a boy searching for his father by becoming a Hunter. But unlike most shounen protagonists, Gon’s journey is not just about strength or power — it’s about growth, friendship, and sometimes the harsh realities of the world. Each arc feels distinct andserves a greater purpose in shaping the characters. From the intense Hunter Exam to the morally challenging Chimera Ant arc, the writing never feels lazy or repetitive.

Character development is top-tier. Gon and Killua’s friendship is the emotional core of the series, and both characters evolve drastically. Killua especially has one of the most satisfying arcs in all of anime. Even the side characters — like Kurapika, Hisoka, Meruem, and even minor villains — are incredibly well-written and memorable. Motivations are rarely black-and-white, and the line between good and evil is often blurred.

The art and animation are sharp and fluid. While not flashy for the sake of it, the fights are smartly choreographed and driven by strategy, not just brute force. The soundtrack enhances the emotional weight of scenes, and the tone shifts are handled with care.
