(3.33) (Please note that this review contains possible minor spoilers of this film) Holy. Shit. Dude So first things first this film is pretty much wholly original, while rebuilding (ba dum tss) the elects that showed up in the last few episodes of the series (Kaworu, activating Instrumentality) while bringing about a brand new setting to tell it. Now I never mentioned it before, but the art in this movie is easily the greatest so far. Everything is animated so beautifully; the action, the horror, the atmospehere, the mise-en-scene is rich with rusted, blood red debris, along with surreal montages that take up the full advantage of animations capabilities. So yeah, shout-out to the fantastic visual work, stylistically this is the best movie so far

The plot in this movie is fucking crazy. Frequently I found myself raising my eyebrows as I saw what was occurring through the story, whether it be major reveals (again) or crazy new approaches that take full advantage of the animation budget. Revelations are all over and they come provided with shock, offering up a build towards climax that goes to mad heights

Clocking in at only 96 minutes, in retrospect it can definitely be seen as something that truly affects this film negatively. The plot pretty much only focuses on Shinji (which while it does make swisher considering what part of this series this movie covers) and plays no attention to the development of the other characters. Misato, Asuka, Ritsuko, even the pointless fanservice addition Mari are all minor characters that literally show up at the first and last 15 minutes of the movie. Yeah, that’s it.
Although arguably the most egregious crime this movie commits is not immediately following up from the ending of the previous instalment, instead offering up several exposition dumps done through side characters. Well at least we get the wonderful ‘new world’ visuals.
What we get instead is the rebuilding of core narrative elements and characterisations that occurred in the series (as is the aim of these movies), this time with a full Shinji extravaganza; along with some Rei and Kaworu, and even Gendo’s intentions becoming clearer and crazier.

So while you do get to enjoy myths greatness of this trilogy so far, it also feels somewhat bogged down by a short runtime that only allows it to focus on Shinji alone and not take full advantage of the introduced elements that are exclusive to this instalment. However inn a positive light, the characterisation of Shinji is amazing here, and provides some of the greatest that we have so far seen from him.

And onwards we are to the finale, so interested to see how this denouement will be handled
