One of the biggest problems I have with SAO is the lack of development for... everything. Since Kirito is a super op and hardcore, he can't grow as a character in any way. He is already at the top and is the best. He can't grow his skills or do anything to try to. They tried to throw in a few things he was bad at, i.e fishing and tried to make it funny but, it just didn't work with the plot. As far as his love life goes with Asuna, you can examine as hard as you want andwont find growing in that either. When people watch anime they like to relate to the main character, it's just to hard to do that in SAO when a 15 or something year old can do literally anything and everything you can't do.

The characters were generic and boring. Asuna was the typical rich girl from every anime all the boys get nosebleeds from. Kirito was the average op character that is seen as a hero in everybody's eyes and has a sad backstory. Klein was the pervert. It seems most anime have those these days. Silica was the annoying little girl that tries to hard to be good at fighting and everything else. She has lots of self pity. Sugoha was the jealous girl that eventually everyone got to like. Don't get me started with Yui. She pushed the whole "family" thing way to hard. In SAO it just doesn't seem like there is room to talk about having a family. There is to much going on for that. With characters like those with a plot like the one SAO has, sometimes, you wonder why they are even main characters, more or less there to begin with.

The plot was decent with SAO. I think the reason a lot of people like it is because of the plot. With the advanced technology being created right now, a futuristic technology style anime is something people want and like to see. If the anime was made in the 80s or something it would be less appealing because of that reason. A problem with the plot however was at some points it was super inconsistent. If the main objective is to beat the game, beat more dungeons and stop fooling around with a bunch of other stuff that wouldn't have changed anything in the story or beating the game. Overall the plot wasn't to bad compared to everything else.

Overall I though SAO was pretty mediocre and overrated. It's not that good in my opinion. I do think if someone is a hardcore shounen fan they will like it. I also things it's worth watching just to see what it's about. I give it a 5/10.
