Review of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
So I don't usually watch Mecha anime at all but this....this was a masterpiece Now, the premise is pretty understandable within the first episode - Japan has been captured by Britannia and it's renamed as Area 11. The people of Japan are now called Elevens. Amidst that, a very intelligent boy called Lelouch (who's actually royal blood) wishes to eradicate Britannia. After a series of events, he gets Geass by a witch called CC which is the power to command anything to anyone. And by Geass, he plans to free Japan again. And my god, this anime deserves every hype it gets. The story itself isnot a very unique one- lots of shows show the war and stuff but the execution is what makes Code Geass, almost the best of them all. It's a very complex plot and sometimes, too much politics and royalty stuff is added yet, there's not a second you'd feel bored
At the end of each episode, there's always a cliffhanger which leads you to want more and more.
Many compare it to Death Note but I think Code Geass is a great anime itself. Code Geass is of rebellion for a country by a boy and Death Note is a massacre done for the world by a boy. Also, the genres vary too.
The characters were also very complicated and sometimes very relatable. Lelouch for example, is a man who wants to make a safe world for his sister, Nunally and for that he can do anything. It's a really nice change to see such a wholesome brother-sister relationship after all that *cough *cough*incest-bait animes give. Another fact that i loved about code geass is that characters are flawed. No one is 'overpowered' or no one is 'super moral compass'. They're all humans with flaws. Suzaku, for example, has a weakness for his past. Cornelia's weakness is her sister Euphemia. This makes the characters more believable and gives better room for character development. Suzaku gets a lot of hate due to him being opposite of Lelouch but if there8s one thing Attack on Titan's taught me is that War has no 'right' sides. Everyone fights for a reason. If you put yourself in Suzaku's shoes, you might sympathise with him too.
The animation styly was very peculiar to me at first as I didn't like the eyes animation. But the expression of the characters were so well done- I couldn't help but slowly fall in love with the design. The best thing about the animation is Mecha. All the robots were done fantastically and the shading was on point.
In the enjoyement part I think this anime wins a 10/10 due to the cliffhangers, mecha fights, mind games and character development. Another good thing about this anime is the pacing. It's very suitable according to the plot. There are some filler episodes (like ep6) to lighten the war mood and they feel great too.
To those who haven't watched, I'd highly recommend y'all to. It's a gem, trust me.
Overall: 10/10
