Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
When I started watching this anime, after 15 episodes my initial reaction was why am I watching this. The animation of the fight scenes, the art and sound was absolutely the reason why I was watching the anime, the storytelling wasn't good and I hated all the main characters and especially Shinji and Asuka. I had seen many reviews on why people don't like this anime and it was all very relatable to me. But thankfully I continued watching it and slowly I realized and it clicked to me what the anime was all about and why people call it "deconstruction of mechagenre" and then on further introspection I realized it was something else which I had never seen before in an anime. The anime is much more than robots fighting, it presents excellent narratives through its flawed characters, the psychological war of the characters is truly what makes the anime arguably the best psychological anime. Many people may call it over pretentious and overrated but in my opinion I haven't seen such a deep psychological warfare presented in such a good way in any anime. It's like you could see the frustration of the person who made this.
The weakest point of the anime was not presenting its plot in an understandable way as many plot points are explained between conversations and chit chats and many plot points are left to viewer interpretation and its a shame because Neon Genesis Evangelion's plot is actually one of the most complex plot present in any anime, and that's why I will recommend to watch End of Evangelion movie after it which makes many things clear. But overall not the plot but the characters, which I ironically hated in the beginning are truly the one who make Neon Genesis Evangelion an amazing anime.
As I already said before the sound, art are very good even though Studio Gainax which made it had production issues due to lack of money and there are parts where you can see it clearly in the anime but nevertheless the animation is good where it is required.
