alright lets go. for context, unlike literally everyone else on earth it seems, i didnt like the original evangelion. i've never seen it as some intelligent masterpiece or what have you, its smart sounding bullshit they threw together week by week because the creator was inspired after learning about sigmund freud. i gave the original a 5, mostly for the first half, because the show completely falls apart in the second. for more context, i actually enjoyed the first two movies in the rebuild. i went in expecting nothing, and i was pleasantly surprised. it seemed that they really got a handle on the characters andtheir motivations. the characters were consistent and even had growth, which i could have never imagined in the original eva. i hated both rei and asuka in the original, but i was starting to become endeared to them in the rebuild.

and then this movie. oh god this movie. in my mind, kaworu is the only valid character in all of evangelion. i watched the entire series for him and i am not ashamed. i was very excited for this movie and probably enjoyed it more than most because he was in it. this movie was all my worst fears realized though.

kaworu is the only interesting character in this movie. the timeskip could have been interesting if executed properly, but instead all of the characters look the same, and instead of growing in any interesting way over the past 14 years, they just grew to suck even more. misato becomes a bitch, asuka doesn't grow out of her childish and selfish nature, mari doesn't grow at all because she is not allowed a personality, and shinji just breaks down more and more.

the characters are what make evangelion, and i thought the show realized this, but obviously they didn't. its pretty clear to me that they need at least two tries to make anything deserving of praise. the character writing isn't even sloppy, its just nonexistent, and there is no suspense to anything as the audience never knows what happens. why does everyone hate shinji? figure it out yourself. don't they all know and care about shinji? apparently that all went down the drain because a 14 year old made an emotional decision.

i truly don't see how they're going to get anything done next movie, as shinji is in the worst state yet, and all of the current characters are too one dimensional and childish to help him out of it. he will probably just get bullied into a robot again, and then everyone will clap when he realizes that its okay to hate yourself.

this has been a very hate induced review after binging hours of this awful series at once.

thanks

Mark
