Review of Black Butler
Criteria Story: 7 The story of Black Butler is quite intricate yet simple at the same time. This is because it is mainly set up into 2-4 episode arcs each with their own story yet also able to connect to the next arc and the previous arc. To put simple though the story basically revolves around a boy named Ciel Phantomhive who lost his parents at a young age and made a contract with the devil to exact revenge on those who killed them. Each arc has a little bit to do with the main story of finding the one who killed his parents even thougheach arc still has its own story.
Ending: 4
Even though I liked the story of Black Butler I found the ending absolutely atrocious, it just build up so much hype and emotion and then just ends. There is really no way to explain it without ruining it so I won’t explain it. Just understand the only thing we wanted to see and thought we would see, we don’t see. They show us the event proceeding it but then when it comes to the main event it just ends, and that is why I gave it such a low rating.
Solid Plot: 8
I really liked how they were able to keep a solid and consistent plot both of the main story and each individual arc.
Moral: 8
Black Butler touched on a lot of dark and realistic themes which is why I can’t understand why it was rated PG 13. However one of the more ‘childish’ themes even though it was illustrated in such a dark manner, is that no matter who you are, where you are or where you’re from we are all human and we all shed the same color blood
Sense: 5
I can’t say this anime made no sense yet it also didn’t make perfect sense. For starters there are just too many questions left unanswered towards the end of the Anime. Such as (SPOILERS?) why don’t they take the collar off of the demon dog and why is the queen so young; along with many others.
Music: 8
The music of Black Butler was amazing, the openings as well as the ending have go to be up there with my top 5. Also the music was very complimentary to the mood of the scene, the pitch and tone would rise and fall depending on the pace of the scene which was very nice to see.
Art: 8
Absolutely loved the art of Black Butler, no two characters looked the same and also the art work in general was done very well
Characters: 9
The highest point for Black Butler seeing as each main character was given a full background and we also got to witness their background. Character progression was also very nice seeing as they don’t all stay the same from episode 1 up to episode 24. Characters gain maturity, respect and love for one another.
Boredom/Captivation Scale: 8
I quite enjoyed this anime except for the ending which really let it down, if it had a better ending then I would have loved it even more.
Personal Score: 7
A 7 only due to the fact that the ending ruined it for me, and the way I see it the ending of an anime takes up about 70% of the score as it affects everything with rating the main criteria. However with that said would I recommend this anime? A hard question because even though it was generally good I honestly said to myself “what a waste of time” after watching the ending. So yes and no; if you've got nothing better to do with your day and just want an Anime to watch that will take up time then watch this, however if you’re looking for an Anime for a smashing start and banging ending then I don’t recommend this.
Genres
Comedy: 7
The funny scenes where generally funny and sometime had me ‘rolling over laughing’
Action: 8
Action scenes where packed with a lot of fighting and a lot of Hollywood style kills. (he kills people with silver ware)
Supernatural: 7
The average type of supernatural yet with its own twist. We have Angels, Demons, Ghost, Mystery killers and even a demon dog.
