Review of Gintama
Today i will be talking about a very special anime in my heart: Gintama. My history with gintama is very simple actually. One day i was on Youtube and i happened to stumble across a video. That video was non other than the ninth opening of Ginntama. I was instantly hooked. The characters and the music in that opening was so quirky and fun I immediately wanted to jump in and look what this was all about. I enjoyed every bit of it but i was watching one piece at the time so i had to pause in for a little. Then a few months agoi finished one piece and much like when i finished Naruto and Hunter x Hunter i felt a big emptiness, then gintama came to mind and...
This is how my review starts:
Story: The story is not very difficult to grasp. Basically our location of the story is Edo, land of the samurai that has been taken over by the alien race the Amanto. Gintoki the protagonist and the two Co-protagonists Shinpachi and Kagura work together in "Odd Jobs" their job is to do errands for their clients but they often happen to take place in unusual events and adventures. Shinpachi and his sister Otae are the children of a samurai that passed away and left them his dojo to revive since the samurai will has died and been banned since the amanto came, Shinpachi meats Gintoki and later on after acknowledging him decides to join him, Kagura on the other hand is from an alien race called Yato, she decided to leave the planet and come to earth in order to live a better life and after some events she too acknowledges Gintoki and joins him aswell. Gintoki's story however is much more complicated and still not completed from where i am now. We know that he has some certain history during the amanto war where he was known as the "White Demon" but that's all to it basically, what makes him enoyable is how he interacts with the cast, his general philosophy and being fun or serious when he needs to be. The story usually consisnts of episodical stories or min-arcs but there are also some important arcs that take more episodes and usually are based on a big villain or some sort of antagonist.
Art-Sound: I don't have many words to share on this topic but i will say this: Both art and sound are very decent. The ost and openings are very good and hit the what the audience wants to feel wether it's a happy/fun ost or a sad/emotional one. The art on the other hand... To be honest i'm not the best one in the art section, i know little of how animation is produced and what is considered good animation but from what i've seen both art and animation are very decent not anything crazy or ground breaking but still able to make an enjoyable experience for a 2006 anime.
Characters: I'm not gonna lie this one is the part i was most keen to touch on. For me a character is what makes a story fun to watch/read and Gintama doesn't fail at all on that aspect. Except from the main cast Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura all and i mean ALL characters in Gintama have their own personality, traits and how they come to interact with each other. Some are very serious looking on the outside but with a very kind and goofy side too, like my favourite character so far in the show Toushiro Hijikata vice leader of the shinsengumi the police of Edo. Some are more close to reality like Taizou Hasegawa or as the crew likes to call him Madao, someone that started really high and fell really low but still fights his way in the life of the homeless and his relationship with Gintoki is just hilarious and really fun to watch. I didn't even touch on half of the main cast yet, we got Kotarou Katsura leader of the anti foreigner faction that's purpose is to exterminate all the amanto aliens from edo. He may sound like a bad guy but he's not the main villain of the story infact he's a great supporting role always helping the main cast, he never puts his ambition above what he think is right and has lots of fun moments too. I could really go on and on about the characterss TRUST ME it's a really huge cast with a lot more important characters like the villain Takasugi Shinsuke and i don't want to make you get bored so i suggest you check them out for yourself. In general i just want to say that every character has something to offer even when they are with the main protagonist or alone, let alone characters that only appear for a single episode have a story behind them so no one feels like they've been less worked meaning you’ll never get bored.
Enjoyment: For me Gintama has everything you need. Action? Comedy? Drama? and a very good set of characters? It has it all. Sometimes you get an episode based on comedy only or an episode based on drama only. But Gintama goes beyond, sometimes you can have a very fun and comic relief story but then it does an 180 and hits you with the drama and the emotional scenes. I don't think there is anything missing from Gintama the only thing i could say i didn't like was the pace. The anime in my opinion is not suited for binging it flows with a pace that should be digested very slowly in order to feel and understand the story. In conclusion i think that everyone should watch Gintama because like i said before it's for all tastes.
