Review of Redline
I’ve seen Redline before, and enjoyed it quite a bit, rewatching the Yellowline race multiple times over the next few years. The style and effort that was put into making everything look good and smooth really paid off as it does not look dated at all in the years since even I’ve seen it. There are good stylistic choices with the dark shadows, unique character and car design and lots of little film techniques that add flair to the presentation. And above all that is that it’s really damn fun. An R-rating is well utilized for the swearing and some drug use, but always keeps alight tone to match with the action. While Yellowline is more of a contained race while Redline is basically an action movie taking place on a racetrack, both are total spectacles. It’s great that nothing is lost between the two races, the downtime is not used to shove some melodrama in or unnecessarily flesh out the characters. The space in the middle just lets the viewer see these characters who know each other already interact in interesting ways. JP and Frisbee’s entire backstory is told in a few seconds in a flashback. It’s a comedy, no one really changes from the start to the end of the story besides the union of JP and Sonoshee.
So yeah. This movie kicks ass, does everything right where I really can’t find a fault in it, and the soundtrack always gets me going. It’s hilarious how Roboworld will stage an entire conflict to prevent the race, but all the racers, fans, and organizers are like “fuck it, we’ll do it anyways.” It’s like the college students who still went to spring break during quarantine, just total, dumb, freedom.
