Review of Akira
[SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR AKIRA. WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST BEFORE READING JIC.] Aaaah, I FINALLY got around to watching Akira...so, here's what I think: Story: While there IS a big overarching story regarding Akira and WWIII and A LOT of other bits. The story mostly follows Kaneda and that's cool, since he was my favorite character in the whole movie. I do like how we constantly switch between perspectives at unintrusive times, first with Kaneda, then Tetsuo, then Kei, then the military, and yet it doesn't feel like ANY of the stories are badly developed since EVERYBODY comes together in the end. It's great! Art/Visuals: Do I REALLY need to sayanything about these visuals. For their time, it was like people WERE in 2019 with how advanced, detailed, and beautifully drawn/colored everything was. Designs of all the characters (even the side ones suprisingly) look great! Sure, it's SLIGHTLY scuffed in some places, but this film has held up AMAZINGLY well, far beyond its original release.
Sound:
The sound design is EXCELLENT. For example, the explosions have a distanct impact to them every time they go off (even if there are just a...few extra ones imho.), the voices (at least in the sub) are all well-acted and fit the characters quite well. The music is AMAZING, especially the abstract tracks, which I'm WAAAAAY more into since I watched Evangelion back in 2019.
Characters:
Like I said already, design-wise they're all VERY appealing and all look distinct and they sound just like you'd expect them to. Now whether or not you LIKE the characters based on how they act...is entirely subjective. Personally, I love all the characters in the movie, none of them really came off as 'annoying' or 'bad' to me, they felt perfectly natural in the movie and what was going on in it and their all surprisingly well-written, which is quite impressive considering how many characters there are in this movie.
Conclusion:
Well, thanks to me having Thanksgiving Break off (wohoo!), I've been able to watch a couple times I've been meaning to see for a while and I'm certainly glad that I FINALLY got to see (arguably) one of the best pieces of sci-fi there is. That's probably the best group of people I could recommend this to, people who are REALLY into sci-fi futuristic stuff...though if you think you'll like the movie too and you're not that it's fine too.
Check it out if you can, good thing to watch if you're looking kill a couple of hours and enjoy yourself.
