Review of A Certain Magical Index
To start with I'd like to say that To Aru Majutsu No Index (A Certain Magical Index) is a good show, and I'll write the reasons why... Plot summary: In the story's world there are people with the ability to project their personal perception of reality on to the world, manifesting as a specific kind of ability. These people are known as espers and come with a wide range of abilities. There is a highly technologically advanced city located somewhere in Japan that researches such abilities, and, using experiments and experimental teaching techniques, helps draw out people's dormant esper powers and enhancing them, the Academy City.Long ago, to combat the powers of espers, several religious factions created methods of harnessing the powers of the gods and faith to perform miracles, also known as magic. At some point a certain line of churches, Necessarius, the church of necessary evil, started collecting grimoires, magical books containing the methods for using differnt magics, 103 000 in total from all over the world, in the attempt of creating counter measures for the magic, and sealed them into the brain of a young female, Index.
Our main protagonist is the young man Kamijio Touma who was born with an ability/curse in his that neutralizes all magical/special effects, including luck which leaves him experiences tons of misfortune and a daily basis, leading to his signature saying "Fukouda"(misfortune) and the isolation from his peers. He was sent to the Academy City in an attempt at finding the reason for his misfortune and a chance for him to lead a relatively normal life.
One day he finds a girl, Index, on his balcony. She's being pursued by magicians she believe to be after the grimoires she houses, and Touma decides to help and protect her. That start his adventures dealing with the magic society, while protecting the acquaintances he makes along the way, magical esper or normal.
Story & Character: The story and characters are well designed, with interesting back stories and personal dilemmas, but there are several inconsistencies, among them the function of Touma's ability. Sometimes his powers disrupt special abilities/magic just by him being in the proximity, while other times he has to directly touch the source of the powers, as well as the fact that he often, somehow, seems to forget his powers, pointlessly making it harder for himself.
Art & Sound: The art style is clean and crisp, but nothing special nowadays(though it looks nice though). The same can be said for the sound design. It is good, but there seems to be a lack of variety. The voice actors are good as well.
Overall: It is a good and interesting show which I believe most people can find enjoyment in, but it most likely won't blow you away...
Give it a try and enjoy!
