Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
Endless Eight - Once before, Never again. No, actually, I skip to the end because that was painful to watch but, that's it? The Endless Eight? That's the only flaws you can point out? At least "The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya" was great. Also, I am not watching it weekly, this show already finished airing so, it's safe to say that I skipped it. Now, I watched this in Broadcasting order so, here are the episodes I watched from 14-28. Endless Eight (Skipped) Endless Eight (Skipped) Endless Eight (Skipped) Endless Eight (Skipped)Endless Eight
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya I
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya II
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya III
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya IV
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya V
Mikuru Asahina's Adventure - Episode 00
Live A Live
The Day of Sagittarius
Someday in the Rain (Watched it but then, I decided to skip around the beginning)
Now, I am going to explain the story in my point of view. Not Nagato, Asahina or Koizumi's point of view. The story is about this one girl named Haruhi Suzumiya. She wished for an alien (Nagato), time traveler (Asahina) and an esper (Koizumi). Her wished came true by either creating another world or rewriting the current world. I believe she also wished for Kyon to be with her. That's when their adventures begin. There's no "main plot" so, it's just an adventure by arcs.
I do believe that the point of the TV show was for character development. Where the show kicks in is really the movie which, I'll be watching next.
To me, the adventure was great and very entertaining. I guess the flaws I can point out was a bit of the Endless Eight and they ended the show with a really boring episode. Although, the REAL ENDING was at Episode 10 (24 in Broadcasting Order).
The best arc has got to be The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya. This was the arc where I really got close with the characters and it was one of the most entertaining arcs to watch.
The animation is also superb especially at the Endless Eight. I am surprised that each episode, yes, it was repeated but the difference is that each time loop has different perspectives. Different point of views and there are a little bit changes. Kyoto Animation really wasted their budget on it despite on how bad the arc was.
Other than that, the animation during The Adventures of Mikuru was really good. They put a "film tone" on to it like it's recorded on a 240p camera. Also, during the Live Alive episode, the fluidity between the instruments and the music was a job well done. Also the syncing when Haruhi Suzumiya was singing.
The first opening theme and the second opening theme was great. Also, I love the first ending theme. Seriously, that was very catchy. For the OST, it's not the best but, it works for a show like this. It really fits.
Well, I suffered from the Endless Eight but I skipped it anyways. The last episode though was painful to watch but other than that, the characters is why I enjoyed the show. Haruhi Suzumiya is a cheerful girl, Kyon (Not his real name) is the one that narrates the show. I like this dude especially on how he narrates which really adds an enjoyment factor. Nagato is the quiet one. Asahina is the shy one and Koizumi is the guy that just smiles and just follows what Haruhi Suzumiya says.
They maybe typical but for me, it's how they blend and interact with each other which really feels like an adventure to me.
Is this anime great? YES. I didn't really enjoy this anime at the start but as it goes on, it's very enjoyable.
I recommend you don't rush when watching this anime or you won't get any character development (Except for Endless Eight and Someday in the Rain).
Overall, great anime and it is very enjoyable.
