Review of Akira
There is a reason that most manga isn't turned into a single movie. Although it did a good job cramming 6 volumes of manga into 2 hours, the story in the movie was downright nonsensical. The plot really only started to make sense after ~30 minutes, and even then it was confusing. Although the plot overall did not make sense, it still had enough flow to go from each plot point to the next, which was good enough to not completely ruin the experience. The real reason that I gave such a high rating is that people probably don't watch this movie for the story.
The art pales in comparison to the animation today. However, it is still one of the best animated anime I have ever seen. Considering that most of the movie is action scenes, the animation makes the movie enjoyable to watch.
In summary, watch the movie for the art and animation.
