Review of Haibane Renmei
(excuse any mistakes made for my english isn's really all that) This has to be the most creative anime i have scene by a landslide. It is one of those gems you come across by accident trying to look for something completely different. This anime follows a girl who is born, with a pair of "charcoal grey" wings, into what we could consider afterlife in this universe. As she gradually acclimatises to this new world, she tries to understand the meaning of the dream she saw before she was born into this world. Assuming that the dream she saw is related in someway to her earlierlife she must decide wether or not she is a "sinner". The idea of a sinner here seems to be different from the conventional idea of a sinner, in a more whimsical manner. The theme doesn't remain static, though, as it also deals with lonliness and punishing oneself/working hard in attempt to redeem their worth. At first you'd think it has some religious relations, but there wasn't a single one that i could point out.
The way this show implements these themes is really imaginative, you couldn't find an anime like this no matter how hard you'd look. It is very atmospheric, much like BECK: Mongolian chop squad. Characters are decently written (for a 13 episode anime).
All that said this isn't the type of anime you'd watch while wanting to unwind with cup noodles and a mountain dew, this anime does a have a lot of flaws; the inconsistent animation, the poor soundtracks, few plotholes. But much of all this is given considering it is an old budget anime (at least it seems like it). Most importantly however, it leaves a LOT of unanswered mysteries. Despite all of its flaws, it holds itself up as a great watch in my point of view and I would recommend to anyone who's willing to try a new type of anime.
