The best Koike Lupin I thought. It goes in the direction of being more a thriller than a caper even more than the rest of them but does it well with tight action and serious suspense. We get to see a lot of World War II/early Cold War era weaponry which was cool and in particular the dogfight at the beginning was very classic Lupin III. The island setting where most of the movie takes place was neat with a lot of variety in its settings. The way the backgrounds are drawn – very clearly computer generated, yet still detailed –works to give the island a particular character and contrasts well with the more traditional looking character figures. The plot is good enough – they do a good job of making the villain seem very strong, every returning character gets some time in the sun, it ties into the previous Koike entries well and in a potentially interesting way to some much older ones. Not something that’s going to set the world on fire or worth calling a hidden gem but most recent anime movies are clearly worse than this.
