Review of Astra Lost in Space
[This is less of a review than a screener for "Should I watch this or not?"] You'll probably like this show if: - you love alien worlds, well-executed world-building, and space shenanigans - you're looking for an action thriller to keep you on the edge your seat - slice-of-life dynamics are your bread and butter But you should skip if: - you're looking for complex, nuanced characters - you're bothered by anime-typical sexism towards female characters (i.e. fanservice, girls having no personality/goals, etc.)- you care deeply about the accuracy and precision of your science fiction
Kanata no Astra is a great show to watch once when you need a good distraction. It's intriguing and thrilling plot is propped up by flat, forgettable characters that can't hold the weight of the story it's trying to tell. Nevertheless, I watched it all at once on a plane ride and was thoroughly entertained. The VAs are great, the music is mediocre, the art style is beautiful and animation is consistently good, but not as punchy as it could have been. (I.e., the production value is high but there isn't anything unique or special about it that leaves any impression, good or bad)
Whether or not you enjoy will enjoy this show will depend a lot on your personal taste, but it's definitely worth a try. If you're not hooked by episode 4, drop it.
