The Rose of Versailles (Movie) · review
Who doesn't know about The Rose of Versaille? The art style and time period in which it was written turned me off from a modern standpoint, so I never pursued it until I saw it was a MAPPA studio movie. It takes a lot of time/energy to commit to a long, historical drama like The Rose of Versailles. I think making the story artistic and skimming over some of the story elements, while hitting the important beats, made it more accessible. If you're not new to shojo, then you're likely familiar with a lot of its tropes. I appreciated that the musical segments hinted atthose trials and tribulations without requiring me to slog through them. It's easy to fill in the blanks and still feel the emotional struggles of the protagonists. It was very true to its shojo roots.
Now, all that said, knowing what's coming in the story, I might be more likely to pick up the original manga/anime and enjoy it. Heck, this movie makes it easier to see what parts I might want to skip to get to other, more important character arcs. I definitely recommend it to someone who'd like an introduction to the Rose of Versailles, and as a visual feast and tribute to a longstanding, influential story.
