Review of Lazarus
A show so burdened by expectations so high that it inevitably disappoints those looking for the next coming of Jesus. Seriously, this show is perfectly fine. Yeah, you're here because it's a Shinichiro Watanabe show simulcasting on Adult Swim - obviously it's going to be the next Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, right? Obviously, this show has been blasted for not living up to its forebears, but on its own, it's a perfectly serviceable anime. The overarching plot regarding an international manhunt for a pharmaceutical mastermind is weak and there is very little threads of intrigue throughout. But in the grand schemeof anime? That's still doing pretty well in this medium. And I think it would be remiss to not at least applaud addressing more interesting concepts in the episodic format, including things like modern cults and climate change. If Miyazaki's going to die soon and we're stuck re-hashing Solo Leveling isekai #145, I would at least appreciate someone to /try/ making works that address things like this.
Not all of the characters are good (looking at you Popcorn Wizard), but I think a large majority of the criticism towards this show has been directed towards the dub. As a staunch sub watcher - it's fine. The dialogue is standard if not bordering on boring, but at least it's not as cringe as others claim. Such is the discourse, I suppose.
The animation is great. I love the effort put into good choreography. Action scenes are hot. We got Chinese not-Electric Batman. No qualms with more of that. Could the art design been a bit better and less Metallic Rouge-y? Sure. But still serviceable.
It's a fun raunch, I enjoyed my time with it. Don't take it as seriously as it takes itself and you'll have a good time.
