Review of Black Lagoon
Black Lagoon is the perfect show to recommend to your guy friends who don't watch/haven't seen anime, given they have a fancy for action and adult content. The immense usage of curse words and flashy gun action, along with Revy's beautiful ass will keep your noob friend entertained and distracted like a baby who is having keys dangled in front of it, but does Black Lagoon have the ability to entertain us more "avid" viewers? The answer is yes IF you don't it too seriously. The story starts off with our lead "Okajima Rokuro", a 20 something business man who lives a boring, monotonous life servingas a punching bag for his company and boss, UNTIL.!!1.!!.. he has to deliver some some disk thing to china or whatever. The ship Mr. Okajima is on get's raided by modern day pirates, then some bullshit ensues and "Rock" as he is newly dubbed, ends up as the crew's newest member. The ship's crew consists two irrelevant characters with little screen time, our MC Rock, and Finally, Revy. Revy is the bad ass bitch you see on the cover, and she is what many would say, the best thing about this show. Actually, she pretty much IS the show. Her jean shorts and and merciless ability to kill anyone pretty much provide the make up of this series.
So now, the story has been established, from this point on the show just follows random missions that the crew go on, often told in 2-3 episode story arcs. During this time, we get some good pretty good character development brewing while we explore Revy's dark past, and Rock's struggle to fit in, but other than that there's pretty much no progression in the series.
The art and sound are up to par but nothing special, they do their job without any serious shortcomings.
Even though there are near constant explosions and gun fights, the lack of a plot driving the action makes this show feel more like the wave pool at a water park rather than the 5 story high mega water slide. That's why i recommend watching this show on the side, along with another series that you care for more, because every now and then the wave pool is a nice, relaxing departure from the more serious anime you might be watching. Especially when nobody is peeing in the water... xD
