Review of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Code Geass is one of my all-time favorite anime, it has so many things that makes it special and interesting. I mean how often do you get to see a character as great as Lelouch and people don't want to watch it because the animation looks "weird", smh. Note: This is just a review for R1, I might do a review on R2. Story: Lelouch is the protagonist of the anime who lives in hiding in Ashford academy together with his sister, Nunnally. They live in hiding because of what happened to his mother. They also got abandoned by their father. But one day, a mysteriousand unknown girl called C.C gives Lelouch the powers of Geass, which he can use to control anyone and make them fulfill his orders. His goal is to revenge his father while destroying the land of Britania to rebuild it to Japan.
Characters: Most of the characters in Code Geass are greatly written with amazing character development. I especially liked Kallen, who is a terrorist who fights with Lelouch. She has a double personality with tsundere tendencies. Suzaku was weird for me. At first, I really liked him. He and Lelouch seemed like great friends but he does some things that all around pissed me off. He is also like Lelouch, royalty. He also wants to rule the world but he and Lelouch have different purposes and mission so during most of the show they clash a lot. C.C is cryptic yet fascinating. The supporting cast was also really great. The Britannia royalty where a mixed bag, however. Some of them were so obnoxious that you just wanted them to get punched in the throat, f.ex Charles zi Britania and that piece of shit brother of his. But, Cornelia and Euphemia were great and make the overall impression of Britiania okay.
Sound: The music in this show was epic, bombastic and powerful during the mecha action scenes, but soothing and beautiful during quiet and more somber scenes. I especially liked the music when they were showing C.C. The opening and ending themes were all really good. I mean that first opening is just priceless. *insert all jibun wo memes here*
Art: The art style might turn you off at first just because of how the characters look lanky and sharp. But it fits the anime and honestly, the art style is unique and special and I really like it.
Other Thoughts: What I really liked about the show is how some episodes were playful and silly, while others were filled with action, surprises, and plot twists. I also really liked how the show just wasn't focused on action and mecha, but also school and drama. I also can't stress enough how amazing of a protagonist Lelouch is, at first hand, you might think he is an is a bit of a sociopath. But deep down he is just such a selfless, kind and caring guy who wants world peace and destroy the horrors which Britania have unfolded. The dialogue was for the most part captivating and interesting. Sometimes it could be a bit long and overbearing but as I said, for the most part, it was great.
Conclusion and overall enjoyment: After 10 years this anime still holds up. I did not watch the show when it came out, I watched it a couple of months ago but it is the greatest mecha I have watched with elements of drama and school. It's a much watch if you like mecha anime with overdramatic sequences.
ALL HAIL LELOUCH VI BRITANIA!
