Review of Gintama

This review is going to be for Gintama as a whole, up to the 2015 series. (SPOILER-FREE) Explaining what makes Gintama a good anime is very hard. In hindsight it might be easier for most people to point out the negatives, which there aren't many in my opinion. Gintama isn't your average Shonen show for starters, so if you're looking for unnecessary drama, power levels, and cool flashy powers you might find this show boring or even mediocre. Which is a huge fat shame. First and foremost this show is a comedy/parody and rarely has any action (but when it does, it is one of the bestaction shows out there), so there are many mini arcs in this show consisting of different and unique characters that might stay for the long haul, show up every now and then, or not show up after that.

There aren't any serious action until 50 episodes into the series and this is why people drop this show. The first 50 episodes are introductions to a huge ass cast of characters and worldbuilding, so I can't really blame anyone here for that.

The core cast consists of only three main characters and this makes for the series to take a good chunk of time in fleshing these characters out along with the minor cast and smaller characters. Character development for the main three will take the whole show for buildup and that's what makes the show very organic in my opinion, I find shows that have too many main characters fall apart very easily and ending up only focusing on only half of the cast and thus making the show feel bland and unrealistic.

The OPS/EDS of Gintama are one of the best, my favorite is Sakura Mitsutsuki and the OSTs sounded only above average in the beginning for me, but it eventually grew on me and it makes every scene in gintama sound very beautiful, suspenseful, and emotional.

In overall, this show can take a while to get into, but I find it worth the watch and definitely upped my tastes and expectations in anime quite a bit. It may not be for everyone however, but I will guarantee that for me, it is one of the best animes out there.
