Review of Hunter x Hunter

The first time I watched it was in 2015. My first watch through, this anime frustrated me. I guess it was because at that time, I was used to power fantasy shounen animes. So the slow burn of the Chimera Ant arc really didn't sit well with me on my first watch through. My second watch through of the series in 2018 was a completely different story. I came to appreciate that Hunter x Hunter isn't supposed to be like other types of shounen anime. It really is a unique type of anime that goes against every trope and cliche that you would come toexpect from generic shounen anime.

The beginning of the series starts off pretty slow, but the show definitely picks up by the time you get to the marathon run of the hunter exam.

Each arc of the series is completely unique. The power scaling in the show is reasonable.

Some negatives are the exposition towards the later arcs. I felt like there were way too many parts in the chimera arc where the exposition was completely unnecessary. It completely took away a lot of the drama out of certain scenes. As with any shounen anime, there are some asspulls that the main characters pull to win in the end... but it certainly isn't as bad as other types of shounen anime.
