Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
Okay, so before you hate on my review, I will tell you, I haven't watched as much Anime as some others have watched, so if any of my comparisons or technicalities sound off, I apoligize. Anyway, onto my opinion of "Season 2". Art and Sound 9/10: I think they are both well done and I don't really have any complaints. Nothing stood out to me and thusly there's nothing wrong with it. Characters 6/10: The character department is where I started to see a dip in what I was really enjoying about the first season. I felt like in Season 1, the viewer was told basicallywho the character was and you could start to guess what they were doing and why they were doing it (Ie Yuki isn't going to go starting a conversation or get involved because she's a quiet character). In Season 2 I felt like I was getting bashed in the head with blatant points on who the character was. Mikuru started to get rather annoying during "The Sigh of Haruhi" with all her "cuteness". *kinda spoiler, if you don't want it skip to the next paragraph* I also felt as though they were really selling Kyon and Haruhi loving each other way too much. I enjoyed how the first season told you it was a possibility but left it open ended enough that you could talk yourself out of it. It's not a big issue, I just didn't like that.
Story 6/10: *sigh*. Those Endless Eight were more boring than reading Technical Manuals. However, I'm sure reading this you've already read/heard about them. Personally, I think it could've been done in 3 episodes. I mean, I get that the 8 episodes connect you and make you feel in a time loop, but there's no excuse for being that boring. Moving on, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is an interesting case, because I wouldn't exactly call it a Slice of Life, but I wouldn't exactly say it has a juicy plot. I felt like Season Two moved closer to having plot, but didn't necessarily get there. Which left me for all but 2 episodes begging for something to happen.
Enjoyment 8/10: I did enjoy this Anime however, don't get me wrong, it was totally worth my time (and it would have been even more so had I not watched the 8). The same humor is back for the most part and it never fails to make you smile.
Overall: 7/10
