Review of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
I rewatched this anime after 10 years and it holds up, I feel like it perfectly captures the vibe of a 2000s anime while also being an exciting watch. Code Geass sees Japan taken control of by the Royal Britannian Empire in a post apocalyptic future, the Japanese are prejudiced against until a saviour appears to lead the people to freedom. It is a bit like the later seasons of Attack on Titan, but Code Geass never hides what it is: the Britannian army are murdering civilians on the street in the first episode. We follow Lelouch, very clever private school boy, who is giventhe god-like power of Geass which is basically one time mind control as he tries to make us a world of piece. Like many other anime protagonists, Lelouch is a teenage boy so he is not making the most moral decisions consistently but he is interesting to watch and you have to sympathise with him. I would say he is Light Yagami’s slightly nicer younger brother.
I love C.C. / C2, her comments and overall nonchalance really make the series. The shameless Pizza Hut advertising, art style and soundtrack make this anime a period piece of what anime used to feel like in the 00s. 10 stars but with a lot of nostalgia.
