Review of A Certain Magical Index
A railgun operates by passing a high electric current through two parallel conductive rails, generating a magnetic field that exerts a Lorentz force on a conductive projectile, propelling it at high velocity. Misaka Mikoto is an esper, whose ability called "Electromaster" allows her to manipulate electricity, yet somehow she is able to create an effect of a railgun without any rails. That's very representative not only of how much the author is familiar with physics, but just as how much sense this whole anime makes. This anime is flashy and vibrant, but it comes at the price of common sense. More than half of the conflictshappen for absolutely no reason other than having a fight, because fights are cool.
The anime opens with a fight between Touma, who can nullify esper abilities, and aforementioned Misaka, who is completely unaware of this fact. After Touma attempts to save Misaka from a bunch of bullies and runs away, Misaka, after dealing with them on her own, catches up to Touma and starts attacking him, because she felt insulted by him trying to save her and underestimating her? Bear in mind that she is not aware of his ability, but that does not prevent her from unleashing her power, hitting harder and harder until she causes a blackout. Even after seeing that Touma can nullify her attacks, how can she know that a really powerful attack will not kill him? This whole encounter doesn't make sense through and through.
And with each episode nonsensical fights pop-up more and more:
Why explain that you accidentally hit a girl because her magical protection was not working, but you are actually her long-time friend who is trying to catch her because she lost her memories, when instead you can act like a villain who just hunts her for no reason and fight the protagonist?
Why explain that another person accidentally triggered a spell and you are going to undo it, when you can act like killing that person is the only way to undo the spell and you are going to do it so that another dumb fight can happen?
And when a fight actually happens, half of the time it ends up in the protagonist appearing out of nowhere and finishing it One-punch-man style.
"A Certain Magical Nonsensical Battle" would be a more appropriate title.
The story has potential, there are some interesting and sometimes complex characters, but the author simply lacks the skills to properly implement them.
