Review of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Man this was all kinds of awful. Normally when an anime ends inconclusively if possible, I will make an effort to go to the source material to find how it resolves and see if what I thought was right or wrong. With this Amime I just didn't care and started deleting links and erasing sites from my browser history so I wouldn't stumble on this again. Non spoiler part of the review. The character development is nearly non existent. I will say this at least the main male character has a measure of believability. He isn't a complete door mat and does try to pursue hisown goals. The rest are thin and flat. Not two dimension, one dimensional at best some are barely points (0 dimensional)
The art style was clean and pleasing to the eye. If that's why you watch anime there's a lot to like. Same goes for the audio on the English dub. Very well done.
Spoilers follow. (For those that don't want them, it was gouge your eyes out bad)
The story was just awful. Not only didn't I care, I would very much like to erase the brain cells that are remembering this and repurpose them for something more useful, like remembering my time spent at the DMV.
Ex. There is a groundhog day arc that's episodes long, which episode nearly exactly the same as every other episode in the arc. They literally might as well and maybe did cut and paste the work done on the first episode 7 times.
Haruhi frequently is on the verge of destroying the world , killing off the rest of the characters, or just torturing random people in the universe and all anyone does is look to the sky whistle and hope she doesn't notice.
There is time travel which suffers heavily from loop / grandfather paradoxes.
Just horrendous. I have no idea why this has the high score it does. Perhaps the people who gave it that read the novels and thought highly of the adaptation, but for me as a stand alone it stank.
