“Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be all right.” I think Evangelion is a good show overall, but it's not perfect, some things are annoying and some are boring. Starting with the good, I do very much enjoy the overall message w, including the movie, it's hopeful and I really like the quote I inserted in the beginning, I also think that the characters are well-written and the themes are well explored. Butthere are flaws in this show as well. (Some are just my personal preference)

I'm not a big fan of mech animes or anything like that, so the premise doesn't really excite me, nor do the fights.
In that aspect, I think it's aight.

But I'd say that the following critiques are the more important ones.

First of all, to me, most of the characters were annoying as hell.
That's the point to many of them combined with standard anime tropes, I understand that, they each have their flaws, and I think that they are very well written, especially Shinji, but at the end of the day, something that is meant to be annoying... Is still annoying, and when you have to endure characters you don't like for 26 episodes like me, you'll feel absolutely 0 emotional connection to any of them, and consequently not care about what happens to them.

Anyways, another complaint I have is the pacing, it takes a WHILE for this anime to get good, I'd say it only gets good in the last "third" of it, the beginning is just plain boring for me, there's nothing really being answered or interesting going on. It's just something that didn't really click with me.

And finally, the main story itself is easy to follow, but most aspects are not, and can't be understood unless you do an extensive research session after watching both the show and the movie, while I do appreciate this anime for being so complex and confusing (that aspect is very unique and this show wouldn't be as popular if everything was just directly answered), I would appreciate it more if some things were answered or made clearer in scenes.

So, that's basically how I feel about it, I think it's a must watch for someone who is already deep into anime and I did love the ending, particularly the final scene in the show, but still, Evangelion is not the most enjoyable watch, I put it on hold about twice before finally finishing it in it's entirety due to it's pacing and uninteresting first episodes.
