Review of Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
***This review was made without reading the original story from the visual novel*** It is quite an admirable show story-wise. Emotions were brilliantly invoked at the right time, this single aspect alone made 60% of the show's impact. It wasn't rushed or exaggerated. The first half of the show was definitely awesome. The story was good but it was the progress and script that really shines. They handled the atmosphere of the show brilliantly while subtly adding minor themes that would later make sense when the story nears its climaxes. After experiencing the thrill and excitement of the story's first two parts you can palpably notice adecline in the quality of the story, a disappointment. You know the final part could have been better, a lot better. You might get the feeling that it was somewhat rushed. Although some of you might beg to differ, those who were planning to add this anime to their all-time favorite probably noticed it. It showed its true color, being a visual novel, with multiple routes, endings and heroines. In the end of the day, there was this single big loose rope, looking for someone to tighten it.
The ending was ok, yet again disappointing. I've always have thought this kind of story would end tragically but I wasn't expecting to be that vague and unsatisfactory. (8)
Nothing special in art and animation. It was mediocre but tidy and consistent. (8)
Background music and effects has always been the invoker of emotions. One might not notice it but even the subtle sound of insects or even the mere silence can bring out the deepest emotions, given that they are played in the right time. In that aspect you can say that the show made the best out of their music department. (9)
It is refreshing to see a cast of non-stereotypes, well might not be completely. All characters are likeable. Each one of them are involved in other one's life. You can really see good connections on each on them and to the main character. They were also developed beautifully. Drei's development was quite noticeable. Not only her physical but also mentally. I would like to further discuss but I would rather avoid spoilers.(9)
The show should've been a lot more enjoyable if they have only they have put more effort on the final act and focused on building a solid relationship to one of the heroine. But it was still a great show to watch because of its good direction and plot.(8)
Overall this show was worthwhile to watch. It is definitely a must-watch for those who loves action, underground organizations and those who want a non-cliched show.
