Review of Devilman: Crybaby
Devilman Crybaby is one of the best manga adaptations in the world. To understand how great Devilman Crybaby is, you have to go back to the beginning of his original manga and its author. The manga Devilman was released in 1972 and received a cancelled adaptation the same year after barely a month that the first chapter was released (they have no time to lose the Japanese). Its author, Go Nagai, was already known because at that time, he had already somehow created the ecchi with Harenchi Gakuen. He was thus already known for his humorous manga but with Devilman, he showed that he coulddo much more serious works. Indeed, at that time, the manga just born, was considered for children, and Devilman, despite all the controversy it created, marked the passage seriously in manga.Delviman spoke of hard themes such as the human screw through a character tortured between his best friend and the human species.
In addition, Devilman being a cult work of manga, she reached a side of popularity high enough to afford several spin-off series. Unfortunately, none of them was able to live up to the original and satisfy the fans: one could cite as an example Devilman lady or the live-action which are bastes disrespectful to the original work. So, when a new Devilman series called Devilman Crybaby was announced on Netflix for 2018, fans were excited, attentive but mostly doubtful about the fact of the usefulness of this new series, being that it could join Devilman Lady and the live-action as one of Devilman’s worst rehabilitation.
So the fans are waiting and on January 5, 2018, on Netflix, Devilman Crybaby, animated by Science Saru, is released. All the episodes come out, and surprisingly, the series is excellent and respects the original work while not simply sponsoring a pale copy. What made Devilman Cybaby so successful was:
1 the right changes: the original Devilman manga from 1972, readapt it to the letter would not be of interest because it deals with topics that only made sense at that time. If Science Saru had decided to simply adapt the manga, it would simply have been silly. The Science Saru studio made the decision to modernize Devilman with elements of technology such as mobile phones, tablets or sports cars. However, simply incorporating these elements could have been bland and only serve to show some semblance of adaptation work. Fortunately, the Science Saru studio decided to use these new elements to symbolize, in addition to the advancement of technology itself, the expression of the human screw. The best addition, in my opinion, is rap. Rappers symbolize the human screw by their mismatch, because afterwards, those who realize these problems, say them aloud, should not be rejected and are undoubtedly the most useful in the world (and not to society because corrupt).
2 the similarities: despite the fact that there are many changes and adds, the background and the same. Devilman original and Crybaby deal with the same background. The human and demonic screw as the good sides are . shown with all their facets. We perceive all the possible emotions during the viewing of Devilman Crybaby.
3 the graphic style: this graphic style and this animation can first seem repulsive because atypical. Indeed the drawings of Devilman Crybaby may seem rude and sloppy but this artistic choice was not chosen by simple ease. Devilman Crybaby being a very bloody and raw work, this graphic style represents a certain horror and brings the viewer into the atmosphere of this series.
In conclusion, Devilman Crybaby is an excellent adaptation to absolutely watch.
