Review of A Lull in the Sea

- English Review (Translated version) I really don't know where to start with this review. Not because I don't have anything to say about each of its sections, but because everything is so average in "Nagi no Asukara" that it's hard to choose something to start with. I'm not saying that it's bullshit (it isn't), but I do consider that it has little in what really stands out or in what differs from other animes. Well, actually I'm going to be truthful: probably if you're a fierce fan of romance you'll love it. And I insist on being a fierce fan because "Nagi no Asukara" is pureromance. Everything else, including the fantasy world created around it, is a simple excuse to develop loving relationships between the characters. Is this bad? I think the answer depends a lot on the person. I like romance, I think it's natural and it's logical that it's part of almost any story. But for me romance should be an addition, an extra to a main plot. In "Nagi no Asukara" it's the other way around. No discussion, in fact. You will know if it is your style.

Obviously in between all this romance (adolescent romance, by the way, with all that entails) there are also brushstrokes of a story that's not all bad. It seems a bit simplistic at first, but then it gets better little by little, even with some mythological "lore". It's no big deal, but at least it's dynamic and entertaining story. Even in a given moment there is a time leap with some characteristics... let's say.... "special". A very brave decision on the part of the scriptwriters and also very wise, because in these episodes is where the best level of the series is reached. Moreover, I would say that this section is of quite good quality in a general concept, not only within what is the "Nagi no Asukara" itself.

The staff of characters is quite common. Nothing that hasn't already been seen a thousand times. The main character, Hikari, is a histrionic kid with a good heart but a bit immature. Other main character, Manaka, is an adorable and kind girl that everybody likes. I don't like histrionics. I also think there comes a point when something is so "kawaii" that it's no longer credible. That's why I'm not convinced by either of them, although it's fair to say that they both evolve for the better throughout the series. I also prefer characters like Chisaki, always in the background, but with a much more credible and better constructed personality. I would also like to vindicate Akari, a character that seems to me to be completely wasted. It's unbelievable (for bad) how they make a girl who doesn't reach 25 looks like a real middle-aged lady. It may have some logic because "Nagi no Asukara" is aimed at a certain section of the public that probably has that perception of people of that age, but... damn, it's shocking. Generational impact, I suppose.

Finally we have the technical section and in this "Nagi no Asukara" does quite well. It has a cheerful and colorful artistic section, with a solid and detailed drawing, both on stages and in characters. The soundtrack is not far behind and has some melodies that sound very good. As for the openings/endings, I prefer the second opening.

Realmente no sé muy bien por dónde empezar con esta review. No porque no tenga nada que decir sobre cada uno de sus apartados, sino porque todo es tan promedio en "Nagi no Asukara" que es complicado elegir algo con lo que arrancar a comentarla. Que nadie se enfade antes de tiempo, no estoy diciendo que sea una basura (no lo es), pero sí considero que tiene poco en lo que realmente destaque o en lo que se diferencie de otros animes.

Bueno, en realidad voy a ser franco: probablemente si eres un fan acérrimo del romance te encantará. Y recalco lo de fan acérrimo porque "Nagi no Asukara" es puro romance. Todo lo demás, incluido el mundo fantástico creado alrededor, es una simple excusa para poder desarrollar relaciones amorosas entre los personajes. ¿Es esto malo? Creo que la respuesta depende mucho de la persona. A mí me gusta el romance, creo que es algo natural y que es lógico que forme parte de prácticamente cualquier historia. Pero para mí el romance debería ser un añadido, un extra respecto a una trama principal. En "Nagi no Asukara" ocurre al revés. Sin discusión, de hecho. Tú sabrás si es tu estilo.

Obviamente entre tanto romance (romance adolescente, por cierto, con todo lo que ello conlleva) también hay pinceladas de una historia que no está del todo mal. Parece algo simplona al principio, aunque luego va mejorando poco a poco, incluso con algo de "lore" mitológico y tal. No es nada del otro mundo, pero al menos es dinámica y entretenida. Incluso en un momento dado hay un salto temporal con unas caracteristicas... digamos... "especiales". Una decisión muy valiente por parte de los guionistas y también muy acertada, porque en estos capítulos es donde se alcanza el mejor nivel de la serie. Es más, diría que ese tramo es de una calidad bastante buena en un concepto general, no solo dentro de lo que es la propia "Nagi no Asukara".

El plantel de personajes es bastante común. Nada que no se haya visto ya mil veces. El protagonista, Hikari, es un chaval histriónico con buen corazón pero un poco bastante inmaduro. La protagonista, Manaka, es una chica adorable y amable que cae bien a todo el mundo. A mí no me gusta el histrionismo ni un pelo. También considero que llega un punto en el que algo es tan "kawaii" que deja de ser creíble. Por eso ninguno de los dos termina de convencerme, aunque es justo señalar que a lo largo de la serie ambos van evolucionando para bien. Igualmente yo prefiero a personajes como Chisaki, siempre en segundo plano, pero con una personalidad mucho más verosimil y mejor construida. También me gustaría reivindicar a Akari, personaje que me parece completamente desaprovechado. Es increíble (para mal) cómo consiguen que una chica que no llega a los 25 años parezca una auténtica señorona de mediana edad. Vale que pueda tener cierta lógica porque "Nagi no Asukara" va dirigida a cierto sector del público que probablemente tenga esa percepción de la gente de esa edad, pero... joder, es chocante. Impacto generacional supongo.

Por último tenemos el apartado técnico y en esto "Nagi no Asukara" cumple bastante bien. Tiene un apartado artístico alegre y colorido, con un dibujo sólido y detallado, tanto en escenarios como en personajes. El apartado sonoro no se queda atrás y la banda sonora tiene alguna que otra melodía que suena muy bien. En cuanto a los openings/endings, me quedaría con el segundo opening.
