Ok i think there have been some miss understandings about this anime , haibane are not being sent here to be punished and more importantly the anime isn't really about people being sent to a world after dying for some reason, at least that's not it in my view. the village is a symbol of our world, and the walls are simply a symbol of death. haibane and humans are both being held behind these walls but haibanes are the "more engaged with the meaning of life". they escaped from gods mind when he fell asleep, they where more godlike than humans and so that maymean they had stronger sense of existence and absence compared to other humans. (if i'm not being clear enough i mean both haibane and humans are humans, the anime pictured the more troubled souls in terms of existential and philosophical thoughts, as the haibane)

anime like haibane renmei are not all about logical explanation tho, the anime uses a lot of symbolism but they are only the clues for you to get the general theme and the rest is about feeling it, about remembering the unexplainables in your'e life and giving a break to your'e head so u can open up to yourself.
some of us may feel like there is something in the back of our head pointing to the reality of our existence from time to time, feeling like something big is missing, like when your'e dreaming and tasting your'e food and enjoying it while deep inside you know this isn't right unless u wake up and realize, just like the way haibane are in the anime.

to me haibane renmei was a projection of these strange feelings and that's why with all the little problems it was more than most anime to me.
