Enrolling Was a Mistake · review
Ban has a special skill: just being able to read everything. Sounds boring? “Wuhu, he can read English.” Ban thought so too at first, until one day he finds out that he can read literally anything: Lost languages, the language of the sword, the language of the body, the language of magic,.... “Admission Is A Waste Of Time” is therefore about this young man called Ban. His unusual talent is noticed early on, that he really can read everything. His grandfather blames this ability on his blood, claiming that he is the descendant of the master builders of Babel! At first, of course, Ban dismisses thisas nonsensical babble, but when he is summoned to a university that trains students to climb the Tower of Babel and thus become gods, he sets out to reclaim the heritage of his ancestors.
Whether you can have fun with this story depends on how interesting you find this description. Roughly broken down, it's the familiar “guy climbs up dungeon” story, but the religious elements, Ban's unusual ability and the fact that Ban should actually be the owner of this tower of gods are a spark that ignited my interest.
Unfortunately, this is also where it ends. The manhwa has many interesting ideas - even beyond the description here - but fails to make the manhwa unique. His gift of ‘reading’, for example, works too much like the abilities of dozens of other protagonists who can steal, copy or otherwise acquire skills or levels or whatever from others. Unfortunately, this is the case throughout. The manhwa says all the time that Ban's ability or his ancestors or whatever are special, even when compared to other stories, but in the end the same thing still happens. Overall, this doesn't have to be a bad thing - the generic, frequently used themes, character types, etc. are often used because they're fun - but I definitely would have preferred more.
What's really negative about the manhwa is the fact that he likes to skip over little things. For example, Ban's comrades suddenly know what his ability is without the reader ever seeing him tell them. Even if it never happens that important things aren't shown, it does disrupt the flow of reading when you wonder, for example, when Ban explained his abilities.
All in all, a very solid manhwa that has lots of great ideas but hasn't used them yet. Since there are only about 50 (translated) chapters, I hope that it's just building up (very slowly) to eventually focus more on the unusual aspects. 6 out of 10 Potato Points.
