You Can't Live All on Your Own! · review
A short but sweet read that could have benefited from being longer. The first two volumes have a good balance between the girls' friendship and their individual struggles - be it with work, boys, or their future. They all have a great dynamic together. You get a sense that they are all true friends who understand eachother deeply, even though you've hopped in to the story in the middle of their lives together. It feels genuine, and is full of lighthearted laughter, love and kinship. Unfortunately, the 3rd volume begins with a breakneck sprint to a resolution to all their problems. As a result, some of thegirls get less screen time than others - especially Shio, the most motherly of four. I don't know if this the case, but you get the sense that the author's hand may have been forced by their publisher to conclude the story in the 3rd volume due to lack of sales or something. For what it's worth, you do get the satisfaction of seeing everyone happily living their lives and starting their own futures, but it happens very quickly.
For a story with essentially 4 main characters, a paltry 24 chapters is hardly enough to squeeze all the juice out of the story - especially if they are likable and standout in their own right. This is the only reason this manga is simply good instead of great. The author is entirely capable of writing characters and stories that can entertain readers regardless of whether they even like or care about josei. For better or worse, it will leave you wanting more.
