Dragon's Crown · review

The best way to describe this manga is a series of D&D sessions strung together into a vague semblance to a larger plot with a mid-tier writer. Calling this a beer and pretzels (Cheetos and Pepsi?) manga is probably accurate. Group of adventurers with different classes and motivations meet up and go out on adventures, usually in different combinations because not everyone can come to the D&D session that week. That's probably a good way to describe it. The manga does try to insert humor now and again, and some of it lands, but the characterization for the characters was shallow. The battles were sometimes cool, which isn't surprising for anyone who is reading zunta's Reincarnation Coliseum, but it feels like not enough of anything was present. I know, it's an official adaptation of a video game, but there have been plenty of great adaptations, so that's no excuse.

I guess if you love the Dragon's Crown game, you should read this, but other than that, I can't say it's something for everyone. Sure, having zunta as the author is a big boost to the manga as that means we've got some attractive babes, and the token Conan the Barbarian (Roland the Brave) is a nifty reference for the fantasy nerds, but I can't say I was highly engaged or that I would tell the average reader to go for this unless they'd like to finish a manga series in an afternoon.
