Touhou Fantasy Kaleidoscope: The Memories of Phantasm · review
This review is short but I want to let anyone who's reading this to know that I know close to nothing about the Touhou series and the things I know come from the adult doujin, and that's still only about the characters' names. On its own, this anime is great. It has great animation, great music, and you can totally tell the ones who worked on it poured everything they've got into this series. Each episode is as short as 16 minutes, not including a minute for a recap, a minute for the opening and another one minute for the ending. So roughly about 12-13 minutesof actual content. I see a lot of people say "for a fan project this is good" to which I have to strongly disagree. To call this "good for a fan project" is outright discrediting and disrespecting the creators of the show. I mean, the quality is on par with any "official" anime you get at every season, like, come on.
Although short, I learned a lot about the world of Touhou, the characters' personalities and abilities, origins, motives, and each of their roles in Gensoukyou. Keep in mind that each episode is only 13 minute long and they manage to convey what Touhou is for new comers and fan service or some sort for regulars. At the very least the show got me curious enough to finally open the Touho wiki and I think it's amazing how they can pack in all that lore into 18 short episodes!
Is the story accurate? Touhou fans can decide that and while I'm not one of them, it's great and interesting enough for me to give this a 7/10. If only they add in voice actors it would've made this show even better, but there's a way to circumvent that though I won't say how.
