Review of SSSS.Dynazenon
I'm now reminded of why I liked Gridman so much. Dynazenon is able to capture the same unique essence that made its predecessor so fun and cozy to watch. It may be dumb and repetitive at times, but you can tell that this is on purpose in order to give the 'Saturday morning' type of nostalgia. The SSSS franchise is not mecha in the usual sense. It's tokusatsu in anime form, so think more along the lines of Power Rangers or old Godzilla films. Each episode has a kaiju battle, but honestly these are only half the appeal of Dynazenon. What really keeps the plotinteresting is how the human characters interact with each other, and how their relationships progress. The cast is also shrouded in a lot of mystery, so every little bit of backstory feels weirdly exciting to learn about. It helps that their designs and personalities are very well realized, as one might expect from Trigger. In general, Dynazenon looks and sounds great. Backgrounds are highly detailed, and the sound design makes for an extra atmospheric depiction of Japan. The only complaints I can pin down for this anime are that I wish it spent more time delving into character backstories, and that the fights never felt like they had any stakes. But hey, I can't bring myself to binge 12 episodes in one sitting very often, so clearly those things didn't matter to me all that much.
