Oh boy. While the 1st season was silly and simplistic enough to be considered a kids' show this one is completely dumpster fire. The "decent" parts got changed, the rest got even worse. So. Gone is the decent-enough '90s aesthetic. The spells got the "particles" upgrade, the monsters have more details and the overall designs are changed. But those are good things, right? Wrong. The simplistic '90s style was going for this story's level. Now, looks like sht, because it feels cheap for today standards, while the story is also sht. Beside those "upgrades", it feels like it got worse all around. The cinematography is gone.Apart from some select, special shots, the overall drawings and details are rushed and weird looking. Thats the general aspect, the visuals for the OP look EVEN worse. Moving on. The audio got worse. The VA feels extremely cheap. The soundtrack also got updated: because there's a cult involved, it was the perfect time to use a choir track and they took it :)) The OP sounds and looks bad. Like I said, the visuals are even worse and the song sound from the '90s but something very low-key. The ED was decent. Next. The pacing is all wrong. The character development is non-existent or all fake. I don't even know how that is possible, considering what this season is about, but they succeeded in not to. Minimal world-building, if any. Same as before, no romance. Will something happen at a later point in the story? Beside the shtty one with the sister, I mean.

And now about the plot. The story is even dumber than before. We get something you usually see in a title with zombies. Drama, thriller, maybe gore and as previously stated, the possibility for lots of character development. Except here is all fake or not warranted. They went for "oh, his poor dad, such a nice guy, see how much he struggles?", I went for "I hope he dies already and be done with those sht scenes". I don't know if you'll stop watching this anime or not, but I wont spoil it for you. Just don't expect any of the good payoffs. You get a character that you won't even remember if "it" was in the 1st episode, and you're supposed to be invested and feel sorry later. Then some other character dies for no reason, just as a plot device, to push certain elements of the story forwards. And some other one dies off-screen. Oh, or the usual "vicious monsters kill random no names in seconds, but the ones that are supposed to mean something have time for last words" trope. Like I said, all "good" stuff.
A story full of plot devices, plot holes and plot contrivances, not even a shred of character development or any of the usual payoffs. Fking dumpster fire... Imagine having flying mounts, riding to meet "the boss", but the characters that leave a looooot later (by car) still have time to arrive in the same city, wander around for a while, arrive at their own fight scene, and THEN the flying ones get to their own scene... So nice of them to synchronize for the season's finale.. But it is good that the MC got more powerful again, with no real effort involved. Right? Fking trash story...
It gets a rating of 2 (1 is reserved for the special ones, 'cause we can't use 0 or negative score for those). Not recommended, no return value (obviously). I won't even say the usual, that "you can enjoy bad media, thats ok", because I can't see how anyone can enjoy this "thing". I'd guess the fans of the source would be even more annoyed with this season. Anyway.
Have a lovely day.
