Review of Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
Sword Art Online is actually the anime that got me back into anime back then in 2013. I really love the series back then, and after realizing many flaws of the series, I still love it of that, though not as much. This is also my first time watching an anime movie on a big screen too (bravo Madman) so this must be some fated god at work lol. Story (8): The story is actually really simple and predictable. But I don't mind this because story doesn't need to be complex to be good, and this story is actually really. The main selling point of this storyis actually Asuna and Kirito relationship and how it was challenge and how much they have grown since the first season. The main drawback of the plot is actually the villain's scheme. It's sound on paper, but pretty convoluted and confusing after you actually think about it. However, the plot threads work well together, so in the end it's a simple and good plot for a SAO movie.
Art (9):
The 9 here is actually mainly for the fights because aside from the fighting scenes, the animation is averagely good for a SAO series. What I mean is it look similar to how it look with the TV series, so even though it looks good, it doesn't exceed from the anime series that much. There're also a lot of far away shot while characters are talking which is quite annoying for me and make it feel a bit cheap when there's no cool fight scene around. But you get a lot of fight scenes, so that's okay. This movie also introduce my favourite Asuna's casual cloth and hair design ever. Now she officially has the best normal design of out all the girl in the series for me (for your info. Sinon is the best in term of game avatar).
Sound (10):
It's SAO so it's gonna have amazing music. The ending theme "Catch the Moment" by Lisa is amazing. And the insert songs in the movie, sang by one of the new character is amazing as well. So yeah, thumb up from me XD
Character (8):
They're SAO characters so you know what to expect. However, Kirito and Asuna once again get a thumb up from me again as their relationship and growth are affected directly by the plot so it's very satisfying when you reach the ending scene. I really love them in this movie. The villain(s) is also pretty good. Their motivation is also solid and properly fleshed out. The scheme is not the best, but I can let it slide... somewhat... They improved upon the characters slightly from the series imo especially Kirito and Asuna so maybe you will like Kirito a bit more if you hate him before... maybe... hard to say. Because if you hate how OP he is then. wohn... you're not gonna like it here XD But I like how badass he is so I'm good XD
Enjoyment (9):
I really love this movie. It contains not only some of my favourite elements of the TV series, but also improve upon my hated aspect, mainly the villains. If you're SAO's fans, you should watch it. If you're not a big fan of SAO to begin with, then this series will not improve your opinion of the series imo
