Review of The World is Still Beautiful
“Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii” aka “The World is Still Beautiful” is what happens when someone with a nail stuck in hippocampus tries to write a plot of a romance story. The premise is a bit cliche but interesting nonetheless. A princess from one kingdom gets sent to a different kingdom to become a wife to its ruler. Not necessarily original but not tragic. The twist is the princess has special powers that allow her to control wind and summon rain and the prince is an obnoxious twat. Nike Remercier is a 17 year old optimistic, energetic, a bit tomboyish princess from the dukedom of rain. Her specialskill is the ability to control the weather but her even more impressive skill is the ability to actually not kill her husband-to-be. She also likes to meddle in the affairs of others, mainly Livius and by the power of plot armor nothing bad ever comes of it. She’s pretty straightforward as a character and absolutely boring. I couldn't find one thing that would make her memorable.
Livius Orvinus Ifrikia is a 15 year old, obnoxious, mentally not so stable ruler of the sun kingdom, who subjugated most of the world. He has a pretty standard, boring, tragic story that I guess is there to make us emphasize with him but to be honest he's so unlikable that it does not work. At all. He can be aggressive, possessive and abusive. Basically the type of character You want to see die in a ditch. Unfortunately it never happens and even worse… the show tries to make him likeable… and fails miserably. I really hoped something will happen to him to ease my pain of his existence.
Now for the most painful part… There is no chemistry between those two morons. Most of the time it looks more like a big sister - little brother arrangement. The show even acknowledges it a few times which makes some scenes in the later part of the series more painful and repugnant.
The plot itself is basically non-existent which is a problem because the characters are too dull to carry the show. There is no goal to most of the show, the characters have no motivation apart from doing the bare minimum of what the world demands of them. Most of the conflicts are resolved almost immediately and in such banal ways that You don’t even get a proper catharsis from it. Even the grand finale is so lazy and deus-ex-mechanized that I almost fell asleep watching the last 3 episodes.
If You don’t care about writing, characters, plot or logic I guess You can watch this. I mean… masochism exists after all but to everyone and anyone who cares about quality writing… don’t do this to Yourself.
