A bored kid, a fat engineer, an annoying blonde, a "genius" girl, Kokushibou & the personification of a certain movie title by Mark Frost & David Lynch walk into a bar; The tender asks how they want their drinks, & they reply: "virgin, with a twist." This is perhaps the most fanservicey anime I have ever seen. Set in a Japan that is rapidly being teared apart by some of the weakest zombies in fiction, High School of the Dead depicts the struggles of a contemptuous group of high-schoolers, with an even more contemptuous teacher (or two.) The show's premise is rare in anime & the1st episode is most certainly the most solid. The characters display a solid understanding of what to do in a zombie apocalypse before they completely throw everything they learned out the window. The middle can be somewhat underwhelming but the beginning & end of this exotic escapade into one of the darkest settings in fiction is most certainly compelling.

The show makes no reservations for showing the lives of the average citizen as the world burns around them, which was the most interesting part for me. Heck, I was just thinking about how zombie media seems to care little about showing the lives of the average police officer or fireman before I started watching, & it was a nice little surprise.

TL:DR - pretty good when I'm not constantly staring up a girl's skirt or appreciating incredibly detailed jiggle physics.
