Review of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Watching Evangelion was most certainly an experience but one of which I was greatly surprised at how different it was compared to how I thought it was going to be. I heard from many friends and peers about how it was a timeless masterpiece, but after I watched it I was more than disappointed about how overhyped it was for me. The show itself was not disappointing, but I think with many popular media, it was extremely overhyped and when I watched it I had too great of an expectation. You've probably read lots of reviews similar to this ( or maybe not) but Ithink that the story was a lot less "epic" than I expected it to be. I did really enjoy how they sort of portrayed the events as a sort of deeper meaning (especially into the movies, they go wild with the character plot and it had me hooked).
The character development of the whole cast was also well made. Everyone was designed with love and PTSD. I like how some of the characters actions were sometimes sloppy/poor, because I think it fit realistically with the fact that at the end of the day, they're 14 year olds were placed in a situation which countless human lives were on the line, fighting crazy alien species that could destroy a city in an instant. Too many people forget that they're just kids.
All I want to say is, for those coming in to watch the show, watch with an open mind, and be prepared for some philosophical messages that will leave you scratching your head.
And for people recommending it to others, please don't overhype it. It was for me, and it personally kind of made it less enjoyable because I expected this crazy mind blowing show.
Just a heads up, they dont really go in depth with the characters until the last half of the show, and the last 2 episodes was truly an experiences
Hopefully I dont get flamed for these opinions :(
