Review of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Disappearance serves as a great conclusion to the epic saga that is Haruhi's story, so much that it to me stands out alone as one of the best anime films period, and perfect viewing along with the Winter season. This review comes after my second go-around with this movie - my first time being before I watched it's prequel 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya' and this time after I have caught up with the events of the show. For fans of the show, this is essential viewing as it thematically concludes the story and wraps up important character arcs established in the show. There aremany references and overlaps with previous episodes which re-contextualizes those original events in new and interesting ways. You get to see the main character's world turned upside-down and try to grapple with the reality of being in a mundane world.
For people who haven't watched the show, this movie still isn't something that is unapproachable and can still be watched without prior knowledge of the show. The movie is broadly self-contained and references to the show are explained to avoid confusion. Most questions you will have while watching will be answered by the end of it. It can serve as a good introduction to the series and further emphasize the mystery with which this whole narrative is wrapped around.
On top of this, the animation is stellar, the careful use of music is impactful, and the entire experience is something so resonating with me to want to return for future viewings, which is usually a rare thing for me to do. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a memorable one that wears its heart and passion openly for all to see. I wholeheartedly recommend at least watching it once, because it is one of the greats.
