Produced by studio Bones and directed by Yasuhiro Irie, Kurau phantom memory is a slow burn. If you come here looking for cool super-powered fight scenes, you’ll find a couple here, but for the most part you’ll be disappointed. Not saying that kurau phantom memory is a bad anime but it’s like Moribito and Gunslinger Girl in the idea that you might first think that you are getting a cool action show but instead you’re treated with story and heavy emphasis on character development. Instead of various fights with alien superpowers the story revolves around Kurau and her “pair” Christmas as they try to avoidcapture from the GPO. The GPO hunts Kurau, Christmas and others because they are powerful life forms called Renax. Renax are powerful aliens that have the powers of flight, super strength, and the ability to walk through objects. And I say it right here, IF YOU DO NOT BECOME EMOTONAILY INVESTED IN THE RELATIONSHIP OF KURAU AND CHRISTMAS JUMP SHIP. I’m being completely serious because if you don’t care about their relationship Kurau Phantom Memory has nothing for you and it will bore you to tears.
Starting off with the music Kurau Phantom memory has a couple of good tracks but variety is not the focus, as there is one recurring main theme throughout the anime, this can be a negative or positive depending on how much you like the song or not. Personally, I enjoyed the song it’s a calming and sweet malady that helps set the dramatic tone of the series. I listened to the dub of the show and it was good, not great but good.
Animation quality was all right, I only watched the series on Funimation’s website for free however it was capped at 480p. For the kind of show that this is the animation is all right nowhere near a visual masterpiece.
Phantom memory is a mood piece, it’s not an action show that you can binge watch for 6 hours. However, if you had a long day and you want to kick back and watch something nice and calming than this might be the show for you. Like I said don’t think that this is an action show, this anime is trying to make you feel, and it does a pretty good job at doing that.
