Review of Durarara!!
Before season 2 starts in January, I would like to revisit the series that I really like personally. That is Durarara. A interconnected narrative with a large cast similar to Baccano (same author). So let’s go! STORY: Durarara is all about the Black Biker, a dullahan, a headless dullahan. But that is not it, Durarara is all about the Black Biker and the people surrounding her. Although she is not the main protagonist, her presence is the reason why the conflicts in Durarara exist. This is key to all of Narita’s works (the author). This is kind of narrative is exciting and enthralling. This ambitious narrative ishard to do. Interconnected storylines and large cast are really hard things to make the story good. But the atmosphere and its premise makes Durarara pretty accessible. It makes mystery and makes it interesting that we bother enough to continue watching to know what and why is this happening. Durarara is very good at doing its own thing.
CHARACTER:
Like I said earlier, Durarara isn’t just about the Black Biker or Mikado. It focuses on many characters each episode and the story is divided to the 3 protagonist. The Harima Mika arc focuses in Mikado, while the Slasher arc focuses in Sonohara, lastly Yellow Scarves arc focuses in Kida. A large cast is typically hard to handle but Durarara is good at this. Not only shows that it has good character writing but it manages to develop their characters further even in a span of 24 episodes. Durarara is good at making its characters interesting while making the story interesting too.
VISUALS:
Brains Base manages to do not only a faithful adaptation but also an innovative one. It has smooth and liquid animation that makes everything better. Little to no animation mistakes or flaws. Aesthetics are good. Fight choreography is decent at best. Personally I like Durarara’s character designs. Well, Brains Base manages to pull an interesting adaptation.
MUSIC/SOUND:
Durarara’s music is amazing. OST are nothing special but its openings and endings are really very good. Uragiri no Yuuyake is one of the catchiest opening themes I have heard. Its endings are good in their own way but I don’t have much to say about it. Complication stands as my favorite anime opening of all time. Graceful lyrics and awesome instrumental. I am not a music critic so I don’t have much to say. Seiyuus did a very good job in portraying the emotions of their respective characters thru voice.
FINAL VERDICT:
Durarara is ultimately a great show. It manages to do everything it tries to do. It makes an interesting premise that people look forward to. It is an amazing interconnecting narrative that makes use of its characters to the fullest. Durarara makes its own thing interesting, to the very best.
